2009 Sci-Fi Fractal Series - The Story

Fri Feb 13, 2009, 4:22 PM
A few words about my current project and possible follow-ups:

I'm a big fan of sci-fi literature and movies, so when I found a way to make fractals having a sci-fi look, this crazy idea came to my mind: would it be possible to tell a story using only fractals?

This has been done countless times with drawings, paintings, 3D digital art, etc, but to my knowledge very rarely with fractals, and it's rather easy to understand why. Fractals are abstract by nature, it's not possible to make a specific scene on command and you have to do with the pictures you are coming up with, which are not necessarily what you need for your story.

So I asked myself, how can I do this? You never know what the next picture will be, and in addition you know it will be abstract!

The only way to circumvent this is to establish a "mood" and suggest the story, rather than explicitly tell it. If you look at the short texts accompanying the first 10 fractals, you will notice I have been very careful not to give any name or any precise detail, except on Commander because at some point you have to establish a background for the story.

But we don't know the name of the place, where it is, the name or physical appearance of the "hero" (replaced by first person point of view), and why he/she is here. The Commander only tell us about this strange murder that would have been committed by Deviants.

As I have said above, I never know what the next fractal will be, so the story has to remain "open". That's why I had this idea to make the Archangel say:

"I have been waiting for you, Deviant!"

And that's where I need your help!

It's just a little "game", but it will take you some time and some thinking. If you don't have time, I can understand it very well and you can skip the last part of this journal.

If you want to participate, the first thing to do is to read what the Commander has to say:

Now let's talk about the Archangel:

He his obviously a major character in this story, maybe a real person or a cybernetic entity (maybe an artificial extension of one of our admins mind :-)), but what is interesting is his role in the story:

A - The Archangel is the leader of the Deviants (or protects them)

The fact he calls the hero "Deviant" opens different storylines:

A1 - The hero is the murderer and is back from his/her mission to report (that does not mean Deviants are on the "dark" side, maybe the President of the Senate was a major threat for the "Galactic Republic", if this is the name of the regime).

A2 - The hero knows who the murderer is and the murderer is not a Deviant. The Galactic Republic tries to make people think Deviants are responsible for this crime (the story will have to explain why), the hero came to report what he/she knows to the Archangel.

A3 - The Archangel believes the hero is a Deviant, but he/she is not. This opens many other storylines (in this case, the hero probably has to be a very special character to be able to hide his/her identity from the Archangel, and in this case what are the hero's intentions)?

A4 - I almost forgot the simplest one: the hero is an agent of the Commander and came to find the Deviants responsible for the murder of the President. But then, why does the Archangel come and talk to him/her, calling the hero "Deviant" when he knows he/she is not? This can be an interesting storyline as well.

B - The Archangel works against the Deviants

This is not how I imagined him, but this can lead to interesting stories as well, so I let you think about it (there are 2 main possible storylines: B1 - The hero is a Deviant and B2 - The hero is not a Deviant, and their different implications).

Congratulations if you have read all of this, now I would just like to know what is your preferred storyline (A1-A4, B1-B2), and if you have time to comment, why. And if you want to suggest a storyline I did not think about, you're most welcome! :-)

Thanks for your participation, and I hope you will find this little project interesting,

Luc

P.S. This story project won't in any way prevent me from posting fractals. For now, I will simply post them as I make them. I will eventually pick and rearrange some of them later to continue the story.
